Rev. Jones Watkins
1891 to 1893
For generations, Israel Baptist Church has been a beacon of hope and spiritual growth in the East Baltimore community. Our rich history reflects a steadfast commitment to God, service, and the empowerment of His people.
Israel Baptist Church was founded in 1891 by Reverend James H. Reid and his family, beginning its journey of faith in East Baltimore. The first pastor, Reverend Jones Watkins, led briefly before Reverend Reid became the second pastor in 1893. Under Reverend Reid’s leadership, the congregation grew, relocated to Orleans and Bethel Streets, and achieved incorporation in 1898, laying a strong foundation for future growth.
In 1910, Reverend James H. Williams became the third pastor, leading the church from 25 to over 400 members, retiring its mortgage, and initiating several auxiliaries. Reverend Edmond D. Meade, the fourth pastor, expanded the church further, organizing numerous ministries, renovating the building, and moving to its current location at Preston and Chester Streets in 1952. By 1955, the church had paid off its mortgage and laid its cornerstone.
Reverend Harlie Walden Wilson, II, was installed as the fifth pastor in 1978. His visionary leadership brought about significant milestones, including launching several ministries and overseeing the construction of a new 1,500-seat sanctuary, which was completed in 2004. His focus on holistic ministry and community outreach has solidified Israel Baptist Church as a spiritual and community leader in East Baltimore.
Through the dedication of its pastors and congregation, Israel Baptist Church continues to serve as a beacon of faith, service, and hope, impacting lives for over a century.
